How to manage the categories module in Perno Store

A step by step guide to managing categories in Perno Store.

The Categories module allows you to build and manage the product catalogue structure for the selected Perno Store. Categories can be organized into root categories and subcategories, helping customers navigate the storefront and find relevant products.

Categories are managed separately for each store. Before making changes, check the Context selector at the top of the dashboard and confirm that the correct Perno Store is selected.

Opening the Categories module

  1. Expand Products in the left-hand navigation.

  2. Select Categories.

  3. Check the Store Context panel to confirm which store you are managing.

The page also displays the number of Visible Nodes, which includes all root categories and subcategories in the store’s category tree.

Creating a category

  1. Click Add Category.

  1. If the category tree is empty, you can also click Create First Category or use the blue + button.

  2. Complete the Core Information section:

    • Category Name: Enter the name displayed for the category. This field is required.

    • Slug: Enter the URL-friendly category identifier, for example home-accessories. Use lowercase letters and hyphens instead of spaces. This field is required.

    • Category Lead: Optionally enter a short introduction or description for the category.

    • Parent Category: Select No parent (root category) to create a top-level category. Select an existing category to create a subcategory beneath it.

    • Show on Home Page: Select this option if the category should appear in homepage navigation and category sections.

    • Category Icon: Optionally upload an image or icon representing the category.

  3. Review the Context panel. It shows the selected store and whether you are creating a root category.

  4. Click Create Category.

To leave without creating the category, click Cancel or Back to Categories.

Creating subcategories

To create a subcategory:

  1. Start creating a new category or use the available action for an existing category in the Category Tree.

  2. Enter the new category’s name, slug and any additional information.

  3. Select the appropriate existing category in the Parent Category field.

  4. Configure its homepage visibility and icon.

  5. Click Create Category.

Keep parent-child relationships clear and intuitive. A customer should be able to understand where a subcategory belongs without reviewing the entire catalogue tree.

Managing the category tree

Return to Products → Categories to review the complete structure for the selected store.

The Category Tree displays:

  • the category name,

  • its position or depth in the hierarchy,

  • the available actions.

A root category is displayed as Level 1. Subcategories appear at deeper levels of the tree.

Use the three-dot icon in the Actions column to access the management options for a category. Depending on the category, these options can be used to:

  • edit the category,

  • add a subcategory,

  • manage translations,

  • manage attributes,

  • remove an unused category branch.

Managing featured categories

Click Featured Categories on the Categories page to manage categories that receive additional visibility in the storefront.

A category shown on the homepage is not necessarily the same as a featured category. The Show on Home Page option controls homepage navigation and category sections, while the separate Featured Categories module manages categories selected for featured placement.

Keep the main category structure relatively shallow and use descriptive names based on the navigation paths customers are likely to follow. After changing the category tree, review the storefront to confirm that the hierarchy, links, icons and homepage visibility are correct.
